  1. I found a lot of themes emerging through the text as I read. Some of the themes I found were “Listen to adult advice, it helps later on” (5,7), “Be more brave and confident in life” (7), and “Don’t talk to strangers even though they might be nice” (7). For listening to adult advice, it helps later on I figured it out by when Aunty Pru gave advice on not to go out at dark and leave Sis alone. Consequences came when he didn’t follow it. That result was Sis was gone. For don’t talk to strangers even though they might be nice I figured that out when he was helping an old man cross the street at late night. This theme has been taught to everyone since young age. That help could have been a plan to capture his sister. At last be braver and confident in life is when I figured it out when Edmund was always scared. When he was braver it gave him strength to talk back to Dupin and get information from him.

    2. One possible theme that I saw emerging was that a person’s greatest strength is fear, for when the mind is in fear, it only gets stronger. A good example of this theme is when Edmund is being followed by a stranger and he is in fear that he will be kidnapped like his sister. “Fifteen yards from then end, Edmund paused again. He took a deep breath. After reminding himself of what he was going to do, he took another breath, then burst into a run” (126). Edmund was scared of the outcome if he continued walking along, so he decided to trick the unknown shadow. He becomes braver and it pays off because he successfully got out of harm’s way and gathered more evidence of the kidnapping of Sis.

  3. A theme I see emerging is: People aren’t always who they seem to be. When Edmund delivers a note to Mrs. Whitman for Dupin, she starts asking Edmund about Mr. Dupin and if he’s been drinking. She also asks if he goes by another name. (73) This makes Dupin seem suspicious because it makes it seem like he’s hiding something about himself.

  4. Over the course the main character Edmund has changed a lot. I believe through the conflicts and interacting with Dupin he has become more mature. When we met him at the begging of the book he seemed very innocent and not very exposed to the world. After having this experience with the disappearance of his sister he had to encounter this entire new thing he had never dealed with before. All these things changed him and made him more mature.
